Norton Nabs Guam Senior Bowling Title for May

Chris Norton took advantage of a washout by seasoned veteran Manny Tagle 206-160 to take the long-awaited Pin Point Guam
Senior Bowler of the Month title for May. The tournament was the first held since Typhoon Mawar closed down the Central
Lanes Bowling Center for nearly two months due to typhoon restorations.

L-R: May 2023 Champion Chris Norton, 2nd place Manny Tagle, 3rd place Sheila Bangs and 4th place Weng Concepcion.

The competition started with the Last Man Standing Progressive Pot. The brief 6-frame competition came down to three bowlers
who survived the race to throw the best pin count to win. This month’s winner was Virgil Toledo who took the guaranteed
percentage of the pot option rather than attempting to roll a second strike to get the entire prize pot which is now gaining close
to $1,000 in prize money.

In the quarterfinals bracket A group, Sheila Bangs and Liz Langas advanced along with Weng Concepcion and Joe Cepeda in the B bracket. Bangs continued her run by defeating Toledo and Langas in the shootout to advance to meet Chris Norton in the semifinal.

Weng Concepcion rolled past Cepeda and Henry Abasta in the other quarterfinal contest to meet Manny Tagle in the other semi-final. Tagle proceeded with his title attempt by overcoming Concepcion with two straight wins including handicap to go to the finals.

Sheila Bangs bested Norton in the first game of their two-game block but fell in the second game to force a best ball roll-off. Bangs came up short as Norton rolled a strike to beat her eight count and turn the finals into a championship match between the top qualifiers for May.

The championship final was tight for the first six frames as both Tagle and Norton never had more than five pins separating
them. But the washout by Tagle in the latter frames proved to be his undoing. Norton who decided for the championship to use an
older ball out of his arsenal, proved his instincts were right as he kept the ball in play and sealed his victory.

There will be no tournament for June due to Typhoon Mawar, but the July qualifiers continue through the month until the finals on July 30 at 12:30. Check-in time is 11AM.
