Rose Tosco took advantage of Manny Tagle’s struggle with the tough lane conditions with a consistent spare game en route to a two-straight match victory to win the September Pin Point Senior Monthly Challenge.
The tournament started with the last man standing competition with a woman remaining this time around. Liz Langas passed on the guaranteed twenty percent of the total pot collected. Instead, she tried for a second straight strike but failed in her attempt to take it all.
The elimination rounds began with Tagle and Frank San Agustin finishing in the top two slots to advance over Jim Pinaula, Edgar Nalundasan, Henry Abasta, and Mike Sanchez in the A Bracket. Tosco and Manny Torre arose as the top two to move up in the B Bracket over Jesse Eyoel, Virgil Toledo, Art Dulla, and Rick Torres.
The second elimination round started with Tagle and San Agustin meeting third seed Bill Taimanglo in a single-game elimination that Tagle won to advance to the semi-finals. Tosco and Torre met with fourth seed Arlene Reyes in the other bracket with Tosco winning their match to qualify for the semi-finals.
The semi-final rounds ended in exciting fashion as the challengers needed to race to two wins against the top two seeds. The higher seeds only needed to win once to get into the finals. Tosco and second seed Liz Langas each won a match which brought it down to whoever knocked down the most pins on their next throw, Tosco started with a strike that Langas was unable to match, thus sending her to the finals. Tagle earned his spot in the finals with a two-pin win in the first game and having to double in the tenth frame to continue his title run.
The final race to a two-win format came down to the veteran Tagle and the league player Tosco. But by this time the lane conditions were getting even tougher as transition oil started to make scoring rather difficult. Tosco showed her apprehensiveness having to bowl Tagle for the title.
But encouraged by the sparse crowd watching the David and Goliath scenario unfold, Tosco held tough with a steady spare game and a couple of washouts by Tagle in the match to take the first game. A double in the latter part of the second game and open frames by Tagle in the eighth and tenth frames clinched it for Tosco 207-157 with handicap.
All participants are also awarded points to be eligible for the final year-end tournament in December. Interested persons may check with tournament director Manny Tagle during the Friday Night Golden Senior Bowling League.
