Guam Team competes in 2025 IBF World Cup

Tuesday, January 14, 2025 – Hong Kong, China

The Guam contingent, including captain Jay Leon Guerrero, Jeremiah Camacho, Ray San Nicolas, and Cisco Uncangco, traveled to Hong Kong from January 5-14 to participate in the 2025 IBF World Cup.

The format featured a random draw in four different pools for the singles event and a best-of-three baker format match play for the team event.

Veteran Jay Leon Guerrero finished pool A play with a 7-5-1 record, narrowly missing advancement after a tie with Team USA’s Kris Prather.

Ray San Nicolas had a strong start in pool B, defeating Malaysian Timmy Tan and securing two more victories. However, losses to the Bahamas and Catalonia left San Nicolas with 21 points, just short of advancing.

Jeremiah Camacho advanced to a playoff in pool C after tying Kuwait’s Moustafa Almousawi with 27 points. Camacho won six out of seven matches on day two to force the playoff, where he emerged victorious, 216-201. In the round of 32, Camacho was defeated by eventual gold medalist Jian Chao Du of China, ending his singles run.

Rookie Cisco Uncangco had a slow start in pool D but showed resilience on day two, finishing with a 6-7 record, including notable victories against Germany and Qatar.

In the team event, Guam ranked 14th in Pool B and missed the quarterfinals, securing six wins for 18 points. Guam needed one more win for a total of 21 points to advance and play against the USA in the first round.

The next IBF World Cup will be hosted in Germany in October 2025.
