Friday, September 19, 2025 – CENTRAL LANES BOWLING CENTER, Tamuning, Guam
Guam’s bowling community received world-class coaching insights during the opening day of a two-day seminar led by Matt McNiel, International Technical Representative for Storm Products, Inc. Hosted by Guam Bowling and U22 Storm at Century Plaza, the seminar delivered in-depth instruction on bowling fundamentals, ball motion dynamics, arsenal building, and lane transition strategies — equipping local athletes with the tools to sharpen their competitive edge.
Guam Bowling President Joey Miranda III formally welcomed participants and introduced the seminar’s distinguished facilitators, setting the tone for a weekend of technical growth and community engagement. He shared updates on upcoming initiatives aimed at advancing the sport both locally and regionally, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to forward momentum. Miranda expressed heartfelt appreciation to McNiel and Mervyn Foo for their expert contributions, and extended gratitude to U22, Storm Products Inc., and SPI Vice President Robert Dong for their steadfast support. Their collective efforts continue to empower Guam’s bowlers with the knowledge and resources needed to thrive in today’s competitive landscape.
With a career marked by competitive excellence and technical innovation, McNiel brings a rare blend of elite performance and deep industry insight to his role. A five-time USBC Open Championships Eagle winner, he remains the only bowler in tournament history to claim three Regular All-Events titles (2010, 2012, 2015). His record-setting 2,326 nine-game total from 2010 stands as the highest in the event’s history and is commemorated at every USBC Open Championships venue. In 2021, McNiel was inducted into the Minnesota State USBC Hall of Fame, honoring his outstanding achievements and contributions to the sport.
At Storm Products, McNiel plays a pivotal role in advancing technical education and performance analytics. His responsibilities include:
- Developing Storm University’s global education and technical programs
- Assisting in the evolution of the Storm App for bowlers
- Creating competitive stat tracking systems for PWBA athletes
- Designing lane conditioner charts to analyze surface, coverstock, and core interactions
His presence at international seminars and coaching events reflects a deep commitment to growing the sport worldwide. McNiel’s collaborative approach and data-driven insights continue to elevate bowling standards across all levels of play.
Joining McNiel is Mervyn Foo, former Technical Director and Head Coach of the Singapore National Bowling Team. Foo brought decades of elite coaching experience to Guam, offering local bowlers a rare opportunity to learn from one of Asia’s most respected mentors. Since 1993, Foo has represented Singapore internationally and played a pivotal role in launching the U22 youth league. His coaching philosophy blends strategic skill-building with holistic athlete development, making a lasting impact on youth programs across the region.
Earlier in the day, Matt McNiel conducted a focused session with the local bowling pro shop Pin Point Guam, offering advanced insights to elevate its technical expertise. The discussion emphasized key elements of ball fitting and performance, including proper grip techniques, ball radius of gyration (RG), differential, flare potential, and drilling layouts for two-handed bowlers. McNiel’s hands-on guidance reinforced best practices and deepened the shop’s understanding of equipment dynamics, ensuring Guam’s bowlers receive precision support both on and off the lanes.
The seminar continues with day two topics including decision-making strategies, adapting to lane transitions, decoding ball reaction, understanding lane conditions, the Storm VLS system, and maximizing bowler potential.
