Despite Aaron Elliott’s 299 first game performance, Justin Mendiola took pole position in the singles event of the 2018 Guam National Bowling Championship being contested at the Central Lanes Bowling Center. Mendiola bowled a three-game set of 708 pins with games of 249, 214 and 245, but with the handicapping system, his total bumped to 780. Elliott was faced with a pin ten stare down in the twelfth shot that placed him one pin shy of a perfect game then dropped games of 213 and 236 for the highest scratch set of the day. His 748 total along with nine pins of handicap landed him in second with a 757 total. Two pins behind is Nikko Gutierrez with a 755-total followed by RJ Santos and Victor San Nicolas Jr. who rounds off the top five bowlers in the event.
Charlie Catbagan and Cesar Villanueva lead the doubles event by fifteen pins over Elliott and John John Ada. Gutierrez and Gregory Borja followed suit in third place as Jordan Hattori and Paul Perez where 11 pins shy. RJ Santos and San Nicolas stands in fifth.
The trios team of Arlene Reyes, Maria Wood and Mae Rose Nauta lead the event followed by Jay Leon Guerrero, Frank Manibusan and Jeremiah Camacho. Lito Teodoro, Gene Bangayan and Homer Cascasan currently sits in third place.
The two-day qualifier continues tomorrow with the top 16 Classified division bowlers advancing to the division finals in the evening. Four divisions will be contested in the finals which include the classified, youth, seniors and open divisions. Each bowler will bowl a set of singles (3 games), doubles (3 games) and trio (2 games) to qualify for each divisional finals.
