Sunday, March 31, 2019 – CENTRAL LANES BOWLING CENTER, Tamuning, Guam
Top seed Manny Tagle was pushed to the limit finishing with two straight required wins over second seed and high handicapper Remy Matanane 269-197 and 214-209 to take the March Guam Senior Bowlers Association title at Central Lanes Sunday.
The top twelve Round one shootout began with twelfth seed Liz Salas dropping to 6th seed Alex Kloulubak 168-160. Tenth seed Nori Catbagan romped over eighth seed Gomes Martinez 278-171 in the other match. In the other bracket, fifth seed January champ Tony Sobrevilla took a narrow 204-190 win over eleventh seed Chris Norton. Ninth seed Edgar Nalandusan also escaped with a two pin win over seventh seed Leo Teodoso 187-185.
Round two had Alex Kloulubak falling to a hot Nori Catbagan 263-206 to advance. Nalandusan continued his title effort by knocking off Tony Sobrevilla 239-220 to head into the quaterfinals.
Nori Catbagan then went into a scoring drought that had him drop his next match to his better half, spouse and third seed Josie Catbagan 197-155 to end his shot for the March crown. Nalandusan also had his title hopes ended by fourth seed John Villagomez 189-169 heading into the semi-finals.
Tagle opened his title run by ending Villagomez’s try 195-185. Josie Catbagan also fell short of the lower seed needing two victories over the higher seed to Matanane winning the first game 215-165. But Matanane came back to take the second game 208-179 to head into the finals against Tagle.
In the finals the first bowler to take two victories wins the March crown. Tagle took the advantage of being top seed and not having as many games to bowl and immediately jumped on scoreboard and swamping Matanane in thew first game 269-197. But Matanane roared back and nearly forced a third and deciding game. But Tagle hung on with critical marks in the final frames to win by five pins 214-209 and claim the title and top money prize.
The next monthly tournament will take place Sunday, April 28, at 11AM. Under the new tournament rules, the three game qualifier will be based on the participant’s Friday Night Senior League scores which count as an entry. The entry is based on a pin over average plus bonus points added to age and handicap to determine the points ranking.
The top twelve bowlers will be announced and/or posted on Friday, April 26. For more information, see the rules posted on the bowling counter or see Manny Tagle at the Friday Night Senior League.
