
Monday, 26 September 2016 – SCAA Bowling Center, Hong Kong, China – Target 2016 Asian Tenpin Bowling Championship
Team Guam held off Macau for the 12th and final spot to qualify for the 2017 World Bowling Championship men’s division during the Target 2016 Asian Tenpin Bowling Championship contested in the South China Athletic Association Bowling Center in Hong Kong, China. Team six player team headed by Jay Leon Guerrero includes Keith Guerrero, Ray San Nicolas, Timothy Nauta, Gregory Borja and Cesar Villanueva.
The biennial championship was contested by a total of 23 countries from the Asian and Oceania regions. Malaysia grabbed top billing edging Hong Kong by one pin. Japan finished in third followed by Korea, Australia, Thailand, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Philippines, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Guam. Team Guam slipped past Macau by 30 pins for the final post. China, Qatar, Kuwait, India, Egypt, New Zealand, Uzbekistan, DPR Korea, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan were the other ten countries who competed in the championship. The combined scores of the Top 5 men from their All Events were used to determine the standings.
In the qualifying for the World Games 2017, Guam finished in 8th place. However, only the top five countries qualify onto the event which will be held in Wroclaw, Poland. Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan, Australia and Korea finished in the top five respectfully.
Keith Guerrero qualified for the Top 16 Masters Event finishing 15th overall in the All Events. Guerrero climbed to fifth place before the last three games of the team events. However, setback in the final three games dropped him out of contention for the bronze medal race. Guerrero competes over the next two days for the final event of the championship.
