Tamuning earns Team silver

The four player Tamuning group put together a steady performance during the Team event of the 33rd Asian Intercity Bowling Championship to edge out Paranaque City and earned a spot in the final four playoff.

The team of JD Castro, RJ Santos, John John Ada and Aaron Elliott streamed a line of 796, 841 and 829 for a 2466 total. Ada led the team’s attack with a 675 set with Santos adding 615 pins, Castro 600 and Elliott 576.

Seong Nam took pole position with a 2650 set as Daegu trailed by 98 pins for second and Macau’s 2499 placed them in third.

Tamuning took on top seed Seong Nam in the baker format which featured each bowler taking turns until all ten frames were completed. Seong Nam took the lead as they strung a turkey to open the match. However, back to back open frames allowed Tamuning to take the advantage midway through the match. With the game at its climax, Tamuning’s errand tenth frame gave life to Seong Nam as the anchor needed to punch out for a tie. Seong Nam slammed the pocket for the first strike, however, he was unable to convert on the 11th frame which allowed Tamuning the opportunity to move on to the gold medal match with a score of 178-166. On the flip side, Daegu blasted Macau 259-186 to set up the finals.

20191118_172515The final match started with the first two bowlers knotted up at two strikes, however, Daegu took advantage of a solid pin ten leave by Tamuning in the third to take a 21 pin lead and never looked back as they added another five strikes in a row to leave Tamuning flat on the tracks. By game’s end, Daegu claimed the gold with a 259 while Tamuning settled for a hard-fought silver with a 207 game.

20191118_084407Charles Catbagan finished the all events in fourth place with a 2482 total over eleven games followed by Elliot’s 2396 (7th place), Castro 2393 (9th), RJ Santos 2360 (14) to qualify for the Masters Top 16 event. Ada performance in the team event allowed him to jump to 23rd place followed by Mendiola 2216 (26), Herrero 2206 (27) and Villanueva 2102 (35).

In the Masters event, Catabagan was the only Guam bowler to make it past the first round as he defeated Daegu’s Shin Soon Chu in overtime. Unfortunately, he lost to Daegu’s Kang Myoung Jin in the Elite 8, 2 games to nil.

The 34th edition of the Asian Intercity Bowling championship will be held in Phnom Phen , Cambodia, tentatively scheduled for November 9-19, 2020.
