Sunday, October 23, 2016 – CENTRAL LANES BOWLING CENTER, Tamuning, Guam
Third seed Bart Lanada was poised for a third Senior Bowler of the Month title with only top seed Rudy Palaganas standing in his way. Only this time the veteran lefty Palaganas took advantage of Lanada’s open frames coupled with his almost error free game to take the October championship with a 210-160 victory with handicap.
The tough lane pattern produced a rather low scoring affair for much of the field of 21 after the 6 games of qualifying led by Palaganas. Scoring improved during the shootout rounds as 10th seed Nestor Valencia took a narrow 206 victory over 8th seed Ben Taimanglo’s 203 and 6th seed Norison Catbagan’s 202. In the odd number bracket, 5th seed Manny Torre’s 224 outgunned 7th seed Joe Mafna’s 185 and 9th seed Kathy Mandapat’s 179 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Lanada then began his run by stopping Valencia 213-176. Torre started likewise by upsetting 4th seed Ray Manibusan. The upsets continued as Lanada won over newcomer Hilda Pelacani 172-156. Palaganas prevented Torre from advancing with a close 176-173 victory to advance to the finals.
The lane pattern finally started giving Lanada trouble as a couple of tough breaks with splits caused open frames that proved to be what Palaganas needed to take the title and bragging rights for the October tournament.
The next Senior Bowler of the Month will be held at Central Lanes will be on Sunday, November 13th at 9A.M. This handicapped event is open to all bowlers 50 years of age or will be 50 by the December 31, 2016.
