Sunday, April 15, 2018 – CENTRAL LANES BOWLING CENTER, Tamuning, Guam
Manny Tagle known by many in the Guam bowling community as “Tagz” along with several senior bowlers preparing for the upcoming Maylasia Senior Bowling Invitational later this month, made up most of the Guam Senior Bowlers Association monthly tournament contestants Sunday afternoon at Central Lanes. When the smoke cleared in the best of three final match, Tagle out gunned fellow member Jim McCoy 258-230 and 276-245 with handicap to capture his second senior bowling title of the year.
The tournament’s high scoring pattern allowed some interesting shoot-out results. Eighth seed Joe Cepeda fell in the final frames to sixth seed Rick Torres 252-233 with handicap in the even number bracket. Fifth seed Mary Pangelinan took the odd number bracket 215 to 204 over seventh seed Pat Roberto. The second round continued with Torres upsetting third seed Liz Salas 199-173. Her husband, fourth seed John Salas suffered a similar upset from Pangelinan 205-181 to advance to the semi-finals.
There were no surprises in the semi-finals as top seed Tagle stopped Torres’ title chances with a 239-221 win while Pangelinan was similarly derailed 227-189 by second seed McCoy.
In the first game in the championship match, Tagle had to pull up some late game magic to win 258-230 thanks to an open frame by McCoy in the latter frames. McCoy tried to come back in the second game to force a third, but Tagle again strung several strikes in a row to finish 258-245 and the championship. It was a fine way to tuneup for the off island contest in Malaysia next week.
