For the second time in as many weeks, veteran bowler Art Gatmen took home the Guam Senior Bowlers Association (GSBA) Senior Bowler of the Month title. This time it was for July. Last week he won the makeup tournament for January 2018. He did it the same way as well, upsetting the top seed Manny Tagle for the championship.
The high scoring pattern gave way to some good four game high series finishes with Tagle led with a 930 plus handicap total.
The shootout started with sixth seed and June champion Pat Roberto over eighth seed Jim McCoy 207-195 with handicap. Seventh seed Chris Norton got past GSBA president and fifth seed John Salas 225-168 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Norton continued his title quest with a 224-196 victory over third seed Rick Torres. Pat Roberto also took a win by upsetting fourth seed Gene Bangayan 206-190 to make the semifinals.
Tagle stopped Norton’s title quest via a strikefest between the two keglers with Tagle outgunning Norton 242-213 to make the finals. Gatmen also put a halt to Pat Roberto’s second title run with a strikefest of his own in the latter frames and a 257-173 result and advancing to the finals as well.
In the finals the winner has to make it to two victories first for the title. Gatmen opened with a five bagger to hold off Tagle with a 257-240 win in the first game. Tagle made a valiant attempt in the second game, but Gatmen, who is no stranger to striking when it counts, strung five strikes in the latter half of the second game to seal the tournament crown 239-200 with handicap.
The December championship for Senior Bowler of the Year shall be held after the Asia Senior Bowlers Championship in Okinawa Japan. Interested bowlers can still vie for one of the Senior Team Guam spots provided they are 50 years of age by December 31, 2018 and are members of the Guam Senior Bowlers Association.
