Story by: Rick Torres, Guam Senior Bowlers Association
Second seed Manny Tagle sent notice that he is gearing up for the 15th Asia Senior Bowlers Championship set for December in Okinawa with a tuneup victory over fellow senior Mary Pangelinan in the Guam Senior Bowlers Association August tournament. He took it in two straight convincing games 228-202 and 270-181 in a first to two victories championship format Sunday afternoon.
Gene Bangayan led the four game qualifying round with a blistering 916 series with handicap. The shootout rounds began with eighth seed Jim McCoy ousting sixth seed Rick Torres 243-208 in the even number bracket. Seventh seed Pangelinan began her title run likewise with a 209-186 over GSBA president John Salas. McCoy was stopped by third seed Buddy Saludo 181-165 in the second round. Pangelinan followed suit by getting past fourth seed Liz Salas 223-165 to advance.
The semifinals took a surprise turn as top seed Bangayan could not continue due to commitment. However Pangelinan still had to bowl two straight games of 197 and 206 as there is a “no automatic win” clause as per tournament rules. In the other semifinal, Buddy Saludo fell to Tagle 205-178 to advance to the title game.
Tagle did not waste time as he had to overcome a 29 pin difference in handicap to beat Pangelinan. So finishing hard by stringing strikes in both games was his key to victory. It was a valiant effort by Pangelinan who had to bowl through ten games just to get to the championship round.
The December championship for Senior Bowler of the Year shall be held after the Asia Senior Bowlers Championship in Okinawa Japan.
