Perfection Propels Tagle to September Bowling Title

09 - September 2018 winners

A perfect 300 game took Manny Tagle from sixth to first seed in the qualifying rounds of the Guam Senior Bowlers Association monthly tournament Sunday afternoon at Central Lanes. But it took everything he had in game pressure situations to beat second seed Gene Bangayan 222-221, 195-230, and 232-199 joining Art Gatman in winning his second straight GSBA tournament.

The high scoring pattern left little among the top eight bowlers going into the shootout rounds. Fifth seed Rick Torres took advantage of two rare open frames from seventh seed Jim Pinaula to advance with a 218-176 with handicap. Sixth seed Jim McCoy took a narrow 186-177 victory in the even number bracket with handicap.

McCoy continued with an upset victory over third seed Manny Torre 217-197 in the quarterfinals. Torres did likewise with a close win over third seed Joe Cepeda 189-184.

In the semifinals where the lower seed must beat the higher seed twice to advance, Bangayan lost to Torres in the first game 214-201, but kept Torres from taking a second win 240-168 with handicap to head into the finals. Tagle had a similar situation losing to McCoy 169-220 in the first game but took the second game with a 240-239 nail biter to make the finals.

Tagle had his hands full as Bangayan stayed flawless matching frame for frame winning a second straight nail biter first game 222-221, The second game was no contest as Bangayan came back to even the “first to two wins” series, 230-195.

But Tagle would not be denied as he stayed true to his game plan and clawed back to take the third deciding match 232-199 to become the September champion. It was a fitting end to the bowling veteran who has been named to coach the Guam senior team who will be participating in the 15th Asia Senior Bowlers Championship (ASBC) to be held in Okinawa in December.

The December championship for Senior Bowler of the Year shall be held after the ASBC tournament. Interested bowlers can still vie for one of the Senior Team Guam spots provided they are 50 years of age by December 31, 2018 and are members of the Guam Senior Bowlers Association. Additional requirements are listed in the qualifying rules posted at Central Lanes or contact any Guam Senior Bowler Association board member or tournament chairperson Rick Torres at 687-4291.
