Top seed Manny Tagle took advantage of an open frame in the 10th by Jimmy Pinaula with a double and a spare to take the March Senior Bowler of the Month title 225-206 with handicap.
This month’s tournament started off with the “Last Bowler Standing” competition. Those who entered the monthly qualifiers on the Guam Senior Friday Night League were eligible this cash competition. This month, Rick Torres took the safe path and, as the winner, chose to keep a guaranteed percentage of the cash prize collected instead of risking to try and win the entire cash pot by throwing a strike in the cash frame.
The tournament commenced afterward with the top 16 bowlers who accumulated the most points based on the tournament formula that took in qualifier scores and bonus points for high scoring, age, and gender. The top four winners from the elimination rounds advanced to meet the top four bowlers in the quarterfinals.
Top seed Tagle beat eighth seed Cesar Soriano and sixth seed Rose Tosco outlasted fourth seed Mike Sanchez to advance to the semifinals in Group A. The Group B matches resulted in third seed Pinaula out bowling 16th seed Gomes Martinez in a three-frame roll-off to advance. Second seed Rick Ada fared better as he was victorious over 14th seed Art Dulla Pinaula continued by knocking off Ada in the semifinals.
Tagle halted Tosco’s tournament run 234-206 with strikes in the sixth, seventh, and eighth frames to set up his final match with Pinaula. Rick Ada’s run was abruptly stopped with open frames that took him out and fell 180-168 to put Pinaula in the final showdown with Tagle. Tagle and Pinaula who are teammates and close friends faced each other for the title and it was down to business.
Each started with a spare and a double to keep the scores even. However, the bowling gods turned on Pinaula with open frames in the 6th and 8th frames while Tagle put a double and spare in the 9th and 10th frame to secure his first senior title since prior to the pandemic.
