Friars repeat as IIAAG High School Bowling champions

In an exciting All-Island Boy’s Championship meet, the Father Duenas Memorial School Friars repeated as the IIAAG High School Bowling champions.  The top four placers from each team were awarded points from their positions as the Friars picked up 23 points.  John F. Kennedy High School Islanders was thirteen points adrift in second place while Harvest Christian Academy ended the day in third place.  The event was hosted at the Central Lanes Bowling Center.

Friars Evan Duenas finished the meet as the top-ranked bowler duplicating his feet from 2022.  He bowled a three-game set totaling 558 pins to outlast a duo of HCA Eagles bowlers.  Duenas led from start to finish, however, the Eagles’ Parker Ashland bowled his heart out on the last game of the event.  After starting the series in 14th place, Ashland bowled a 186 game to jump to fourth place after two games.   He then bowled the highest game of the season, finishing the event with a 229-game, falling five pins shy of claiming pole position.  Teammate Elijah Duenas dropped to third place as he rounded off the top three spots to qualify for Monday’s step ladder round which will determine the boy’s individual title.  Elijah Duenas rolled a 515 total on the competitive long oil pattern.

The top ten bowlers will compete on Monday in a special baker format where each bowler will receive their medals.  Micaiah Benton was the highest-placing bowler for the Islanders, Benton fell to fourth place after reaching second place with one game remaining, missing the top three cut by 19 pins.  Friars Aron Hernandez and St. Paul Warriors Miles Perez tied for fifth place as Islander’s Tristan Adonay settled for seventh.  The Friars’ Aaron Lupola and Graig Reyes took eighth and ninth place mounting a last-game surge to help their team to the league championship rounding off their top four players as Jayden Flores of the Guahan Academy Charter School Starfish closed out the top ten keglers.

The televised finals will be hosted at the Central Lanes Bowling Center on Monday, May 8, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. as the top ten boys and girls bowl a Baker format event, followed by the top 3 finals for both divisions to determine the individual champions of the 2023 IIAAG High School Bowling League.
